Alton Regional Multimodal Transportation Center

Original Article

The City of Alton, Illinois, and the Madison County Transit District collaborated to create a multimodal transportation facility in conjunction with the Amtrak High-Speed Rail station. This creation was the Alton Regional Multimodal Transportation Center, and the centerpiece of the 58-acre Robert Wadlow Town Centre.

The station amenities include an indoor public waiting area with service desk, restrooms, electronic arrival and departure information signs, ticket counter, and vending, along with Amtrak operational spaces and a transit bus terminal for Madison County Transit to work in conjunction with the new Amtrak Station.

The facility has five transfer gates, one ADA gate for ACT buses, and stations for three coach buses. The intermodal aspect of the new facility was to integrate all facets of the transportation network, including high-speed passenger rail (St. Louis to Chicago line), intercity bus systems, regional transit lines, automobiles, taxis, bicycles, and pedestrian facilities.

Exterior amenities include a covered walkway and waiting area for bus transportation, curbside drop off for both bus and rail departures, bike trail and bike lockers, and a community green space. A 250-space gated parking lot with real-time surveillance was constructed to accommodate both the transportation center and the Amtrak station.

Future development of the remaining property will include a car rental business and commercial businesses and shops.

The station was designed with brick and cast stone veneer over CMU walls and a structural steel frame, bar joist, and metal decking. Roofing was standing seam metal roof and EPDM rubber on the flat areas. Natural light is provided with large expanses of storefront glazing. Many of the exterior finishes were carried to the interior with the use of brick and stone, and porcelain tile on floors, walls, and base. Ticket counters were constructed of solid surface with plaster laminate casework.

LED lighting is used throughout the building, canopies, and parking lot. Heating and air conditioning are conventional roof-top gas units. Each public entity has its own security system and emergency back-up systems.

A historic display was crated and hangs on two walls in the lobby, displaying the original station and emphasizing the importance of rail transportation throughout Alton’s past, including the historic Lincoln/Douglas presidential debate.

While including many modern amenities, the prairie-style structure of the Alton Regional Multimodal Transportation Center uses brick and stone that match those of many of Alton’s existing buildings, to help visitors feel welcome and appreciate the architecture of this quaint historic river town on the Mississippi.
